Our new kitchen equipment arrive: What's cooking?
April 2017
Axel attends the JCF Young Chemists' Meeting of the three Berlin universities which dedicates a full day to gender, family, and career aspects of a chemist's life. His talk in the "kids and careers" session is well received. The following panel discussion with GDCh president Thisbe Lindhorst and colleagues from academia, industry, and NGO is a true encouragement for students and coworkers to challenge the employer's family support beyond the high-gloss brochures and drive normative and infrastructural innovation. Kids and careers could go very well together, but we are not quite there yet!
The group travels to Hamburg to sniff some big city beats! City walks, boat cruises, beach bombing, beer sampling, team building at summerly weather, including the first encounter with the new workplace. Have a look here why we already get excited about the move!
Well done! Matteo and Dieter publish their paper Synthesis and Catalysis of Redox-active Bis(imino)acenaphthene (BIAN) Iron Complexes. Have a look here!
Happy Easter holidays!
The summer term starts on April 24th. Axel visits the world's largest F&F manufacturer Firmenich at their Geneva site. City, weather, and company have presented their best sides. Thanks for having me!
March 2017
10-year-anniversary of the European Research Council (ERC). Congratulations to one of the strongest motors of european research. We took our slice of the cake!
The Graduate School Chemical Photocatalysis (GRK 1626) holds its annual spring meeting with student presentations and riveting tutorials by Louis Fensterbank and Paolo Melchiorre. Lessons learned, thanks a lot!
Max Hansmann gave an inspiring lecture on Lewis acid catalysis starring Au and B complexes. Good luck in San Diego!
This year, our friends at Marburg University host the annual Chemiedozententagung at summerly weather. It's a great scientific event with lots of opportunities to socialize with peers over coffee and beers.
The DFG priority program "materials syntheses in ionic liquids" (SPP 1708) enters its second period. There are two new passengers on board: Matthias Bauer (Paderborn) and our group teamed up to study solvent and surfactant effects on the growth and catalytic activity of iron(0) nanoparticles. The battle for funding takes place at the Steigenberger Hotel in Dresden just in front of Manaf Halbouni's riveting Aleppo bus barricade sculpture.

The aftershow party brings some big city beats to Regensburg. Great night (and early morning) out!
In late June, temperatures skyrocket in Regensburg. The plazas and riverwalks are crowded with sun worshippers. Our group goes for an early morning bike tour around town before temperatures reach the 30s at noon.
Euro cup fever takes hold of the group! The group's bet competition clearly demystifies Raul's sports knowledge and sees Axel, Vroni and Michael take the lead after the group stage. Sadly, the extra pts. for an Albanian advancement did not come true for Axel.
