Sustainability
Research Group Prof. Dr. Stephan Seifert

The University of Hamburg has launched a sustainability initiative based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Department of Chemistry is also committed to sustainable development and is thus making an important contribution to a sustainable society.
The research conducted by Stephan Seifert’s research group supports the following goals in particular:
- No 2: Zero Hunger
- No 3: Good Health and Well-Being
- No 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
The group develops algorithms that can be used to analyse complex relationships in medical data, e.g. to understand diseases, and to authenticate food. In the latter area, methods are being developed to prove the production method or geographical origin of food. Both are valuable pieces of information for consumers and important for the sustainable use of food. To make authentication analysis as sustainable as possible, portable spectrometers are being used that do not require chemicals and use significantly less energy than conventional methods.
