Sustainability at the department
Based on the UHH sustainability initiative, the sustainability team at the Department of Chemistry has set itself a variety of goals (including the resource-conserving use of energy and water) in order to make its own contribution to sustainable development at the University of Hamburg. The aim is to raise awareness of environmentally friendly behaviour in the department and to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions.

The approach is based on the Sustainable Development Goals
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) form the core of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda follows on from Agenda 21, which was adopted at the Earth Summit in 1992. 20 years later, it was decided at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development that clearly defined development goals should be developed. These were developed by a 30-member team from 2013 and harmonised with the 2030 Agenda at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.
Since then, the UN has published annual SDG Progress Reports to track progress towards achieving the SDGs.
The 17 goals are divided into the areas of ‘biosphere’, ‘social community’ and ‘economic system’. Their aim is to mitigate climate change, promote clean energy and sustainable consumption and combat poverty, hunger and inequality.
