Glycostructures in Biological Systems - Synthesis and Function
From 1997 - 2009 this collaborative research grant was awarded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) to fund research focused on molecules containing carbohydrate structures related to biological systems. The proposal was initiated to stimulate interdisciplinary research between biophysicists, chemists, biologists, biochemists, and physicians. Often projects were built around long existing collaborations. The collaborative research was comprised of three major sections:
- Section A: Snthesis and biosynthesis of glycostructures
- Section B: Structural and conformational elucidation of glycoconjugates and glycocomponents
- Section C: Biological significance of glycostructures
The Speaker was Prof. Dr. Joachim Thiem. During the first funding period (1997 - 1999) 17, and in the second phase (2000 - 2002) 18 research projects were funded. In the third period (2003 - 2005) 17, and in the fourth funding phase (2006-2009) 14 research projects received support.
The closing Symposium of the SFB 470 "From Glycobiology to Glycochemistry" was held on May 28 and 29, 2009.
The final report was published in European Journal of Cell Biology 2010, 89 (1).
