Activities at Hamburg Site

Development of novel, nanostructured catalyst materials in combination with in situ, operando, and ex situ analysis methods

At our main site, with a laboratory area of approximately 415 m², we also train students in various subjects such as chemistry and nanoscience.

Synthesis Laboratory – This is where novel, nanostructured materials for electrocatalysis and heterogeneous catalysis are developed. These are used, for example, in water electrolysis, fuel cells, CO₂ conversion, or in the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) using the Fischer-Tropsch process.

Electrode Laboratory – Promising multifunctional electrocatalysts are transfered in the form of thin-film electrodes, gas diffusion electrodes, or catalyst-coated membranes for subsequent electrochemical characterization.

Analytical Laboratory – Various analytical methods support our research and development of functional materials in understanding structure-property relationships and degradation mechanisms of materials.

Research and Demonstration Facility Along the Value Chain of Green Hydrogen

The Hydrogen Terminal Braunschweig acts as an incubator for a wide range of questions relating to hydrogen technology from industry, science, and society.

The heart of this approximately 4,700 m² real-world demonstration facility is the 1-megawatt alkaline membrane electrolyzer (AEM) for hydrogen production.

In approximately 360 m² test hall, materials and components for electrolysis and fuel cells are evaluated at single cell to short stack level.

The sector coupling aspects of hydrogen, electricity, and heat are also among the research topics at the Hydrogen Terminal Braunschweig. This unique facility will enable research into the interplay between electricity generation from solar panels and storage using batteries, waste heat from the electrolyzer, together with heat pumps, and hydrogen production, storage and utilization for refilling station for heavy-duty vehicles.
