DFG: Investigation of organic guest molecules in confinement
PhD position (f/m/d)
A PhD position (EGR. 13 TV-L, 67 % of the regular weekly working time) is available immediately (limited until 31.03.2025) within the frame of a project funded by the DFG.
The scope of duties:
This project deals with the modification of the physicochemical properties of organic guest molecules by geometric confinement in modern nanoporous materials (nanoconfinement). These usually deviate completely from those of the corresponding bulk systems and are thus not only highly interesting scientifically, but also offer great technological potential. The tasks in the project include the synthesis and characterization of various nanoporous organic-inorganic hybrid materials (e.g. PMOs), which are structured in a systematic way (different pore characteristics and particle morphologies) by endo-templating. Subsequent filling of the nanopores with organic guest molecules, such as fluorinated hydrocarbons and azo compounds, is also the focus of the project. Finally, the influence of the nanoconfinement on the phase behavior (structure and [thermal] dynamics) of the organic guest molecules will be investigated using a variety of complementary characterization methods.
Your responsibilities:
Duties include scientific services in the above project. Outside of the service duties, there is opportunity for advanced scientific training.
Hiring erquirements:
- Completion of a university degree appropriate to the duties (chemistry or material science).
- Experience in the field of synthesis, characterization and impregnation of nanoporous (organo-) silica materials and the investigation methods necessary for characterization (including X-ray diffraction, gas sorption, NMR and Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis and calorimetry). At a minimum, however, in the field of organic synthesis (to represent organosilica precursor compounds) and a willingness to expeditiously fill existing gaps.
- Sufficient language skills in English to enable target-oriented communication in written and spoken form with the project partners as well as the preparation of project reports.
