Lending/Return of books/media
How can I borrow books?
- You need a valid library card to borrow books.
- Books can be taken from the shelf and borrowed from the information desk.
Where can I return my books/media?
For return of media, please use the box opposite the porter's lodge.
In the Chemistry Library, the extension of loan periods or rebooking is possible on request. To do so, send an e-mail to bibliothek.chemie@uni-hamburg.de and include your library card number and your name.
How can I extend books/media?
- You can renew media from the "A-Loan" independently via your library account.

Can I reserve books/media?
Borrowed books from the A-library loan can be earmarked. You will receive a separate e-mail from us when the item is available.
Is it possible to pay fees?
Payment of fees (only with EC or credit card) is possible during opening hours. In the Chemistry Library, the extension of loan periods or re-booking is possible on request. To do so, send an e-mail to chembib@chemie.uni-hamburg.de and include your library card number and your name.
Please note that fees from the State Library can only be paid at the State Library (cash, EC or credit card).

What are the current opening hours?
Monday – Friday 9 am – 7 pm
Can I learn in the library?
- For learning and working, two reading rooms, individual workstations, group workrooms and lounge areas are available.
- The individual workstations all have power supply.
- The group study rooms are equipped with whiteboards, a beamer or an Activeboard. Whiteboard pens and digital pens as well as the remote control for the activeboard or beamer can be obtained from the information desk.
- Lockers: The use of the lockers is not mandatory. You may take anything you need to study with you to the library. In addition to the lockers for visiting the library, we offer 20 lockers for borrowing. The loan period is 4 weeks and cannot be extended. You must have a valid library card to borrow materials. It is not allowed to deposit lab materials, gowns or similar. The lockers are intended exclusively for your learning materials and, if applicable, your borrowed media.
Is interlibrary loan possible?
The service is aimed at diploma/master students/doctoral candidates/scientific staff of the Department of Chemistry. Send us your literature requests (articles, essays, books (also electronic), DIN standards/patents) via the order form. We also deliver journal articles and book essays from library collections of the University of Hamburg, which are connected to the campus delivery service. As a cooperation partner of the Campus Delivery Service, the Chemistry Library also delivers articles and book essays from its holdings.
All other users please contact the SUB Hamburg.
Students can currently request free interlibrary loan vouchers from the SUB by e-mail (fernleihe@sub.uni-hamburg.de).
How do I get essays and excerpts from books?
The free scanning service "Campus Delivery Service" can be used by all members of the University of Hamburg. This is a service of almost all university libraries where you can order essays and excerpts from books. These will then be sent to you by e-mail. To order something via the campus delivery service, you first have to log in to the Katalogplus with your library account (ID number and your personal password) ("-> Log in"). When you have found something you would like to order, click on the Campus Delivery Service icon in the top right corner of the title display (not all media are available for Campus Delivery Service).
Clicking on the icon will open an order form, fill in all marked fields there. If you need multiple essays from a book or journal, please place separate orders per essay.
Can I suggest books or e-books?
You can suggest a book or e-book for purchase at any time. Please fill out the web form as completely. You will be informed by e-mail if and when the title is available.
Is there a book scanner in the library?
Yes. There is a book scanner in seminar room 101 on the upper floor of reading room 1. A chemistry computer with scanner is also available for students.

How do I get a library card?
Library cards for students and employees of the University of Hamburg:
Library cards are issued in the Chemistry Library by e-mail.
- Please fill out the online form first.
- Then please send us a scan/photo of your identity card (front and back) or passport and confirmation of registration as well as your current certificate of study or employment contract by e-mail to bibliothek.chemie@uni-hamburg.de.
- The library card will be sent to the postal address provided.
- The library card is free of charge for students and employees of the University of Hamburg.
- up to your 18th birthday, please also enclose the completed supplementary registration form and a scan of the documents specified there.
If you do not belong to this group of persons, please contact the Hamburg State and University Library.

Graduation
How do I get the signature on my organisation sheet?
Please send us the completed organisation form by e-mail. We will then sign it digitally and return it to you by e-mail.
Where can I submit my thesis?
The dissertation (2 copies) can still be sent to the library by post or can be made in the return box opposite the porter's lodge. Please enclose the routing slip or send it to us by e-mail. We will then sign it digitally and return it to you by email.

Scanning / Printing
Scanning
There is a book scanner in room 101 on the upper floor of reading room 1. A chemistry PC with scanner is also available for students.
Printing
There is no printing facility or photocopier in the library. Please use the book scanner in group room 101 if necessary.
The computer room (CIP1) at the library is open.
If you have questions about printing in the CIP pools, please contact the IT Service (it-service@chemie.uni-hamburg.de).
E-Media
How does it work with e-media?
Start your search either in the Campus Catalogue, in the Database Information System (DBIS) or in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB). To use e-media you either need an additional programme (VPN client) or you log in as a member of the University of Hamburg with your valid library card.

Can I borrow e-books and how do I find e-books?
No, there is no lending service. It is possible to read e-books online or download them chapter by chapter. Further information on how the e-book works is explained on the information page.
