Evolvable Catalysis

L. Longwitz
The research of the Longwitz group is focused on the development of new synthetic methods and using evolution as concept to find amazing catalysts for chemical reactions. Nature has been using evolution as a tool to improve its own catalysts, enzymes, for a long time. Catalysis is a key technology for more sustainable processes, and we work on catalyst design at the interface of biochemistry and organic chemistry. Our goal is finding methods to improve catalysts in terms of sustainability, activity and selectivity! For this, we are looking for the perfect hybrid catalyst, which is a fusion of evolvable natural enzymes and versatile chemical catalysts.
