Prof. Dr. Markus Fischer has been accepted as a member of the European Academy of Science and Arts (EASA).
The European Academy of Science and Arts welcomed 38 leading scientists from 11 nations as new members at a ceremony at the University of Salzburg on 15 April 2023. Admission to this transnational network of scientists, artists and intellectual leaders is considered a high honour. This year, the honour was also bestowed on Prof. Dr. Markus Fischer, Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hamburg, where he is also Director of the Hamburg School of Food Science (HSFS) and spokesperson of the research area Artefact Profiling in the Cluster of Excellence Understanding written Artefacts.
The ceremony was opened by the President of the Salzburg Parliament, Dr Brigitta Pallauf. The keynote speech was given by Prof. Dr Verica Trstenjak, Professor of European Union Law, former Advocate General at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg and Member of the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), on the topic of "Human Rights in the Digital Age: Will Algorithms Triumph over Humanity?"
EASA is a non-governmental, European association dedicated to promoting scientific and societal progress. As an academic forum, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts addresses a wide range of key topics and issues in an interdisciplinary manner and develops possible solutions across disciplines. It currently has around 2,000 members from all parts of the world, including 37 Nobel laureates, politicians, spiritual leaders and the recently deceased former Pope Benedict XVI. It is not possible to apply for membership of the Academy. New members are nominated by a selection committee on the basis of their achievements in research, education and society and selected by the Academy Senate. Admission to the Academy is therefore an honour and a recognition of scientific and social achievements.
