We have established a hollow-fiber infection model for investigating the time-courses of bacterial growth and killing. Through computer-controlled pumps, human-like pharmacokinetic profiles at the target-site of infection can be mimicked to study pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic properties of antibacterial drugs and drug combinations.

We develop and validate (EMA, FDA) bioanalytical techniques to quantify drugs, metabolites and other small molecules in biological fluids such as plasma using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Based upon pre-clinical and clinical data, the group develops pharmacometric models using non-linear mixed effects modelling to quantify interactions between drugs, patients and other drug targets such as bacteria. The pharmacometric models are ultimately utilized to provide optimized treatment recommendations for special patient groups (severe infections, organ dysfunction, oncological patients and intensive care unit patients) using clinical trial simulations.

The group aims to bridge the knowledge from pharmacometric techniques back to the individual patient. Based upon developed or published pharmacometric models, we develop and maintain web-based model-informed precision dosing software tools (www.TDMx.eu) to foster personalized treatment by tailoring drug regimens to the individual patient.
