Curriculum Vitae
José A.C. Broekaert studied chemistry at the University of Ghent (Belgium), where he took his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1976.
In 1977 he was a Humboldt Research Fellow and from 1978 to 1991 scientist at the „Institut für Spektrochemie und Angewandte Spektroskopie (ISAS)“, now „Institut für Analytische Wissenschaften (ISAS)“, in Dortmund (Germany).
From 1991 tos 1998 he was Associate Professor (C3) at the „Universität Dortmund“. From 1998 to 2002 he had the Chair of Analytical Chemistry at the „Universität Leipzig“ and from 2002 to 2014 at the „Universität Hamburg“, where he terminated his active service.
In 1990 he got a call as Associate Professor at the „Technische Universität München“.
He was Elected Referent for Analytical Chemistry of the „Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)“ (2000 until 2003) anf for the „Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek“ (Flanders, Belgium)(1989-1998 and 2007–2014), President of the „Deutsche Arbeitskreis für Angewandte Spektroskopie“ (DASp meanwhile DAAS) from 1995-1998 and 2003-2010 as well as of the „International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IAEAC)“ from 2010 to 2018.
He lectured from 1983 to 2014 at the "Universität Antwerpen" (Belgium). He was a Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar (1998) and from 2004 to 2019 "Adjunct Professor of Chemistry" at "Indiana University" (Bloomington, USA). In 2015 he was guest professor at "Chuo University" (Tokyo, Japan).
In 2014 he became an Ordinary Member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was/is Member of the Advisory Boards of the journals Spectrochimica, Acta B, Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry, Applied Spectroscopy, Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, Spectroscopy and Spectral Analysis (PR China) and Mikrochimica Acta.
Under his guidance 102 Diploma/Master theseses and 52 Ph.D. dissertations have been performed.
His field of expertise is Analytical Chemistry with special reference to atomic spectrometry with plasma sources and applications especially in environmental and material sciences.
Results were published in 234 peer reviewed papers, 1 book („Analytical Atomic Spectrometry with Flames and Plasmas“ (Wiley, 2002 und 2005) as well as 2 multi-authored books.
Honors: Kasimir Pulaski Medail, Technical University of Radom (Poland)(1994) - Fellow of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (U.S.A.)(2008) - Török Tibor Medail of the Spectrochemical Association of the Hungarian Chemical Society (2012) - Honorary Membership of the International Association for Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IAEAC) (Lausanne - Switzerland)(2023)
