Master Thesis 1
Master Thesis – Development of Fouling Test for Membrane Analysis
Background
Membrane fouling is the accumulation of materials such as proteins, water contaminants and bacteria on the surface or within the pores of a membrane. It is one of the significant limitations of membrane separation process since it decreases the membrane's performance. Consequently, extensive research is underway to battle this membrane limitation.
The project
At the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, we develop new and innovative membranes less prone to fouling. Therefore, a new test stand to analyze the fouling behavior will be developed. The overall aim is to establish protocols to study the fouling behavior (i.e. the flux reduction) of polymer membranes. Different fouling solutions (containing either a protein, oil or natural organic matter) will be tested.
Additionally, membranes with antifouling properties will be synthesized and analyzed. Besides the fouling behavior, the membranes will be characterized using different analysis methods, including IR spectroscopy, molecular weight cut-off, zeta potential, water contact angle and scanning electron microscopy. The student will get an insight into these techniques and learn about membrane technology and polymer science.
About Hereon
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: Around 1,100 employees contribute to the tackling of climate change, the sustainable use of the world's coastal systems and the resource-compatible enhancement of the quality of life. From fundamental research to practical applications, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range.
The Institute of Membrane Research develops new membranes and processes for separation of substances. State-of-the-art equipment and methods for the synthesis, characterization and processing of polymers as well as membrane preparation, module development, process piloting and modelling of separation processes are the focus of research.

Master Thesis 2
Master Thesis – Development of Membranes for Oil/Water Separation
Background
Membrane technology is used to separate oil from water in various industries, including oil and gas purification, petrochemicals, and wastewater treatment. It is a promising technology that can provide high separation efficiency, low energy consumption, and low waste generation compared to traditional separation methods. The selection of the membrane material and configuration is critical to the success of the oil-water separation. Membrane materials such as (modified) polymeric membranes can be used depending on the application and operating conditions.
The project
At the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, we are constantly working on the developing of improved and innovative new membranes. In this project, a standard polyacrylonitrile ultrafiltration membrane will be modified using hydrophilic and amphiphilic substances. The student will learn different modification methods and synthesis strategies used in membrane science and directly apply them.
Afterwards, the membranes will be characterized using different analysis methods, including IR spectroscopy, molecular weight cut-off, water contact angle and scanning electron microscopy. The student will get an insight into these techniques and learn about membrane technology, polymer science and surface modification.
Finally, the membranes' separation performance will be tested. If there is sufficient time, an upscaling approach of the membranes with the highest separation efficiency will be tried.

Your tasks
- The task of the master students will be synthesis and post modification of block copolymers. The block copolymers will be used to fabricate integral asymmetric isoporous membranes
- The polymers and the membranes have to be thoroughly characterized using, NMR, GPC, FTIR, streaming zeta potential, water contact angle, scanning electron microscope etc.
- Permeance and retention of water, dyes and ions have to be investigated.
Your profile
- Currently enrolled as a master student in Chemistry, Nano Science or related disciplines
- Good knowledge of polymer science
- Capacity for team work in an interdisciplinary environment
- Fluency in English and German is mandatory (spoken and written)
Interested? Then we are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive application documents (cover letter, CV, transcripts, certificates etc.). Please send the applications to Dr. Zhenzhen Zhang and (zhenzhen.zhang@hereon.de) or Prof. Volker Abetz (volker.abetz@hereon.de).
