Main Research Fields
The main research activities at theTMC institute concern syntheses andcharacterization of polymers.
The most intensively studied groups of polymers are polyolefines, liquid-crystallinepolymers, biodegradable polyesters, polypeptides, water soluble polymersincluding polyelectrolytes and polysaccharides.
A great deal of work is focused on the syntheses and evaluation of newcatalysts such as metallocenes, catalysts for metathesis reaction and catalystsfor ring-opening polymerization of lactones and related heterocycles.
Polymer physics benefits from the short distance to DESYand its synchrotron radiation laboratory HASYLAB.We study the nanostructures of oriented multiphase polymer nanocompositesin real-time, e.g. during melting, fibre spinning or during straining ofelastomers and develop evaluation methods. The structure of extremely thinpolymer layers is studied under grazing incidence.
Technical chemistry is studied in two main streams: first, pyrolysisand recycling of polymer waste, used tires, oil shale etc., second processengineering and optimization of emulsion polymerizations.
Polymer Science at TMC and Materials Science at the "Technical UniversityHamburg-Harburg" (TUHH) have severalfields in common and stimulate each other. Since the TUHH does not runa chemistry department of ist own, the corresponding teaching is done byprofessors of the TMC in Hamburg-Harburg.
More detailed information on the present fields of research are providedby the individual research groups of the institute.
