Prof. J. F. G. Vliegenthart ist derzeit Leiter des Instituts für Bioanorganische Chemie an der Universität Utrecht, Niederlande. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf dem Gebiet der Strukturanalyse von Oligosaccharide und Glycoconjugaten von biologischem und medizinischem Interesse.
