Mixtures of cholesteryl benzoate and p-azoxyanisole present a cholesteric phase. Measurements were made, by optical methods, of the rotatory power and pitch of mixtures containing 5, 10, 15, 20% of benzoate in p-azoxyanisole. Mauguin's theory, as extended by de Vries, expresses rotatory power as a function of pitch and double refraction of the thin anisotropic helically stacked layers. The results permit verification of the Mauguin-de Vries theory and, if we compare them with Cano's results for other mixtures, the Maier-Saupe theory.
