Quasi-elastic and inelastic 10 Å neutron scattering by nematic MBBA

Summary

The quasi-elastic and inelastic spectra of 10 å neutrons scattered by MBBA in its nematic phase at various angles are reported. For small energy transfers the measured spectra have been resolved in the quasi-elastic peak, whose broadening as a function of the momentum transfer allows an evaluation of the self-diffusion coefficient, and in a broader underlying contribution due to molecular rotations. It has been found that the gas model fits very well the inelastic scattering.

Si riportano gli spettri quasi elastici ed anelastici dei ncutroni diffusi da un campione di MBBA in fase nematica su cui è fatto incidcre un fascio collimato di ncutroni da 10 å. Per piccoli trasferimenti di energia gli spettri misurati sono stati risolti nel picco quasi elastico, il oui allargamento in funzione del momento trasferito consente la determinazione del coefficiente di autodiffusione, ed in un contributo più allargato sottostante il picco, dovuto alle rotazioni molecolari. Si è trovato che il modello a gas si adatta molto bene agli spettri anelastici.
