Abstract

This chapter presents angle-resolved photoemission spectra at different photon energies and different polar angles, which illustrate the photoemission and inverse photoemission phenomena in the group III A metal, aluminum (Al). It provides an overview of the experimentally observed surface states and resonances. A summary of the surface core-level shift data for the three low index planes is presented in a table. Dispersion of the surface states in photoemission spectra from the (100) surface along the directions of the surface Brillouin zone is illustrated. The chapter also illustrates surface photoelectric effect on the (100) surface of aluminum, and presents contour plots of charge density for the surface state of aluminum. Surface density of states for Al(111) using a truncated image barrier for the model potential, and , and decomposition of an Al 2p spectrum from the (100) surface giving a surface core level shift of 93 meV and an additional Gaussian broadening of 85 meV of the surface peak are also figured out.
