Abstract

This chapter provides some graphical representations of structural defects at surfaces of metals. The graphical representations include (i) STM-image of a Pt (100) surface with hexagonal reconstruction and an atomic step, (ii) REM image of the (001) facet on a Pt single-crystal sphere near the [110] azimuth, (iii) 4f7/2 core-level photoemission spectra, (iv) REM images of the (111) facet of a Pt single-crystal sphere with monatomic steps, (v) REM image of annealed slip traces on Pt (111), (vi) LEED patterns from clean stepped Pt surfaces, (vii) variation of the work function ΔΦ with hydrogen coverage θ, (viii) schematic model for the adsorption of H atoms on a (stepped) Pt (997) surface, (ix) experimentally determined values of the spot splitting Δ of LEED spots on the surface of a cylindrically shaped W crystal versus crystal orientation α, (x) dependence of the work function Φ on the crystallographic orientation α, (xi) plot of the true work function Φ for T = 2300 K of the stepped surfaces versus the corresponding step density ns, and (xii) normal emission 4f7/2 core level photoelectron spectra of W surfaces at a photon energy of 70 eV. Binding-energy shifts ΔEB and relative intensities of 4f7/2 surface core levels for Pt surfaces are tabulated. Experimentally observed stability of different orientations of Rhenium (Re), Rhodium (Rh), Ruthenium (Ru), Tungsten (W) are also tabulated. The orientations for which the geometric structure (singular, stepped or faceted) was established are marked in the stereographic projection for W.
