Abstract

This chapter presents the surface diagrams for NaCl surfaces. For NaCl, the atoms are represented by circles of radii a/6 (Na) and a/3 (Cl) so that the sum of these radii is equal to the nearest neighbour distance. Since each atom is at a centre of symmetry for the structure, all surfaces of the set {hkl} for a particular δ are identical. Further, if the size difference between the atoms is ignored, the tables and diagrams can be used to describe the surfaces of the same indices in a simple cubic crystal with a lattice parameter of 1/2a. Positions of atoms in ideal surfaces of NaCl crystals are illustrated. All co-ordinates are given in terms of a/2, where a is the lattice parameter.
