Atomic Defects in Metals · Na

Abstract

This chapter discusses the properties of atomic defects in sodium (Na). Electron irradiation experiments have indicated mobile self-interstitial atoms (SIAs) at the irradiation temperature T < 6 K, and allowed to identify stage III at 15.5 K. Positron techniques give no response to thermal-equilibrium vacancies. Properties of Frenkel defects, SIAs, and vacancies in Na are tabulated. Resistivity recovery of electron-irradiated sodium and resistivity recovery of sodium following plastic deformation near 4K and 2.3 K are also illustrated.
