The Bachelor in Molecular Life Science will be introduced in the winter term 2006/2007. It is an interdisciplinary
career and comprises basic knowledge in the areas of biology,
chemistry, physics and medicine. The career is offered by the departments of
Chemistry and Biology (Faculty for Mathematics, Informatics and
Natural Sciences) as well as the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg together and is organised by a joint commission.
The degree 'Bachelor of Science' qualifies you for entering
professional life. A consecutive masters-career will be offered. In
exceptional cases PhD-studies can be started directly after the
bachelor. The bachelor is internationally accepted and facilitates the
exchange with national and foreign universities. |
How is the career structured?
Bachelor- and masters-careers are build of modules,
i.e. the career consist of small units of events with the same topic.
Each module is finished by a written exam. Creditpoints are given for
each passed module. The Bachelor of Molecular Life Science is intended
for six semesters and comprises lectures, practices and seminars.
Students who finish all modules successfully and collect 180 creditpoints achieve the title of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.).
The following topics are tought:
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Physicochemistry
- Genetics
- Developmental Physiology
- Microbiology
- Biochemistry
- Molecular Biology
- Cell Biology
- Bioinformatics

In tha last two semsters a specialization takes palce in the following fields:
- Structural Biochemistry
- Molecular Medicine
- Biotechnology
- Molecular Biology and Virology

Additionally there is the possibility to
practice the acquired knowledge in a project study. Furthermore lective courses
can be taken (foreign languages, economic studies, law, journalism,
informatics). General skills are trained in an industry practice.
The studies are concluded by a written bachelor thesis.
Projectstudy and bachelor thesis can be done at institutions of the
Departments of Biology and Chemistry, as well as the Medical Faculty.
The following specializations can be chosen:
- RNA Biochemistry
- Protein-Engineering
- Molecular Cellbiology
- Struktural analysis of Proteins und Nucleic Acids
- Applied and Molecular Biology of Plants
- Cellular Signaltransduction
- Bioinformatics
The aim of the B.Sc. career Molecular Life Sciences is to provide
knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology, to link neigbouring
topics to each other, to capacitate students to analyze and solve
complex problems, to teach techniques and to help understand their
impact on nature and society.
Soziale Kompetenzen wie fremdsprachliche Kommunikation,
ethische Verantwortung und Teamarbeit sind ebenfalls Inhalte der
Ausbildung und qualifizieren für den Abschluss Bachelor of Science.
